However is a formal way of saying "but"
However is used at the beginning of a sentence
after a full stop or a semicolon and it takes a comma after it
Although means "in spite of the fact that"
Although introduces a subordinate clause
and it needs another clause before or right after
Compare the meaning and punctuation of:
I went out, although I was tired / Although I was tired, I went out)
I was tired. However, I went out.
