She is one of the so-called "Trimates", three pioneering female researchers
who showed the world that real science requires guts
by studying the big apes in the wild (chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans)
in adverse circumstances for years
The other 2 are Dian Fossey - portrayed in the 1988 movie "Gorillas in the mist"
and Biruté Galdikas
